"How much does it cost to set up a microbrewery in India?" is the first question almost every founder asks us. The honest answer is that it depends heavily on decisions you make early on, and two brewpubs of the same size can differ enormously in cost. Rather than quote a figure that will be out of date in a few months, this article explains what really drives the budget so you can plan with confidence.
The major cost buckets
Brewhouse and cellar equipment
The brewhouse (mash tun, lauter tun, kettle and whirlpool), fermenters, bright beer tanks, a glycol chiller, a hot liquor tank and cleaning systems are usually the largest single line item. Cost depends on:
- Capacity: batch size and number of fermenters.
- Automation: manual, semi-automatic or fully automated control.
- Origin and build quality: domestic or imported fabrication, steel grade, weld finish and instrumentation.
Civil works and utilities
Drainage, epoxy or tiled flooring, structural reinforcement, plumbing, electrical upgrades, ventilation and steam or electric heating are often underestimated. A site that needs major structural work can change the whole budget.
Licensing and approvals
Excise licences and statutory clearances vary by state and change over time. Budget for licence fees, consultants and the time it takes to secure approvals, because rent often has to be paid while you wait.
Draft system and front of house
Serving tanks, beer lines, taps, a cold room or under-bar cooling, glassware and the bar build itself.
Pre-opening operating costs
Malt, hops, yeast, CO2, cleaning chemicals, lab equipment, staff salaries during training, and test batches that will never be sold.
Where founders overspend
- Buying a bigger brewhouse "for future growth" when extra fermenters would be cheaper and more flexible.
- Paying for automation the team cannot maintain.
- Cutting corners on the chiller or drainage, then paying for it in beer quality and repairs.
Where not to save
Temperature control, sanitation design and water quality decide whether your beer is consistent. Investing here protects every rupee spent elsewhere.
Getting an accurate number
The only reliable way to estimate your cost is to size the brewery around projected sales and get comparable vendor quotes for that exact specification. Our brewery setup consultancy does exactly that, independently of any equipment vendor. We are based in Bangalore and work with projects across India.
