Bangalore is widely called India's craft beer capital, and for good reason: the city has one of the densest clusters of brewpubs in the country and a young, curious audience that is willing to try new styles. That also means competition is intense. Here is what we tell founders planning a brewpub in Bangalore.
Choosing the neighbourhood
Areas such as Indiranagar, Koramangala, Whitefield, HSR Layout and the central business district have proven demand, but also high rents and plenty of competition. Newer residential and tech corridors can offer better economics if you can become the default local spot. When comparing sites, look at:
- Weekday versus weekend footfall, especially office crowds for after-work trade.
- Parking and access by cab, since most guests will not drive home.
- Neighbours and local rules on noise and operating hours.
- Whether the building can physically take a brewery: floor loading, ceiling height, drainage and power.
Licences and approvals in Karnataka
Brewpubs in Karnataka are licensed through the state excise department, along with other clearances that typically include FSSAI registration, pollution control board consent, a fire NOC and local trade licences from the city corporation. Rules and fees are revised from time to time, so confirm the current requirements with the authorities before you sign a lease, and build approval time into your opening schedule.
Brewing for the Bangalore palate
Bangalore drinkers are adventurous, but most sales still come from a core of easy-drinking beers. A strong opening tap list usually includes:
- A clean, crisp lager or helles.
- A Belgian-style witbier or hefeweizen.
- A hop-forward pale ale or IPA.
- A rotating seasonal, such as a fruit beer, a stout in the cooler months, or something using local ingredients.
Consistency matters more than novelty. Guests come back for the beer they loved last time.
Water and climate
Bangalore's water varies by source, so test it and plan treatment to suit your styles. Year-round temperatures also make reliable glycol cooling and cold-room capacity essential.
Training your team
In a competitive market, service sets you apart. Staff who can explain styles, recommend food pairings and pour correctly sell more beer. See our staff training program.
